Experience

I have over 22 years of experience in education and a passion for ensuring students are prepared for a life of success after school. My career started as a high school and later middle school teacher. I also spent time as a high school and collegiate coach early in my career. I have been fortunate to serve as an elementary school principal, charter high school principal and comprehensive high school principal. In my last district, I served as assistant superintendent of teaching and learning, assistant superintendent of operations, and more recently, as the superintendent.

Locations of Experience

My career started in Desert Hot Spring, California where I was fortunate to open a new high school in a diverse community of high need. From there, I moved back to Oregon to become a college basketball coach and soon after began teaching middle school in Oregon City. My first experience as a principal came in Oregon City at King Elementary School. From there, I became the principal of the Clackamas Academy of Industrial Sciences in Oregon City. I then moved to the Newberg School District where I served as the high school principal. My last district experience was a return to the Oregon City School District where I first served as the assistant superintendent of teaching & learning, then as assistant superintendent of operations and most recently as superintendent.

Journey

I'm here because

I’m excited to be returning as a Portico coach for the upcoming year. My career in education was born out of my early experiences with coaching youth. I’ve always had a desire to work closely with others as they work towards their aspirations. Throughout my time as a school leader, I was always drawn to supporting and mentoring colleagues and those interested in moving into leadership roles. After years of being a school and district leader, I felt this was the right time in my career to transition to coaching. My role as a coach with Portico has allowed me to engage with many school leaders in a deeper and more meaningful way. I greatly enjoy being a support to those leading our schools and look forward to learning and improving alongside my cohorts this year.

I got here through

I think the two skills I accessed the most as a school leader, and continue to as a coach, are curiosity and creativity to solve problems and create innovations. I’ve always looked at most things with a curiosity for why they were and what could be done differently to make them better. I approach many of my conversations with coaches in the same manner. I’m curious about the challenges and opportunities school leaders are facing and enjoy partnering with them to find solutions for their students.

My hope for this community

I really look forward to seeing relationships develop in a way that allows leaders to be vulnerable with their challenges to student success during each cohort’s counterpart meeting. The most enjoyable experience for me as a coach is seeing a counterpart community support each other in a way that leads to a positive impact for students. Each school leader faces challenges that are unique to their community, but the collective support from a cohort of school leaders often unearths opportunities to positively impact students in that leader’s community.
