SUMMARY:Creating Brave Spaces With Staff and Students
DESCRIPTION:About This Event\n\n\n\nWhether with staff or students\, we avoid certain topics for fear of conflict or discomfort. When we avoid these tough conversations\, however\, it can lead to confusion\, anger\, and distrust. We also lose out on the opportunity to deepen connection and understanding. This Crowdsource is centered on creating brave spaces with staff and students\, in order to build a culture of transparency and trust. How do we plan and structure these conversations? How can we harness the “heat” of disagreement and work toward shared solutions? Before this event\, we encouraged leaders to take 5-10 minutes in advance to read this Toolkit article:   How to Control the Heat: Quick Ways to Effectively Manage Difficult Topics & Situations If you only have five minutes or less\, think about the following prompt: Think of a recent time when you were faced with a conflict or difficulty with a student\, teacher\, parent\, or someone else in your school community. How did you approach the situation? How would you most like to handle similar situations?

SUMMARY:Operationalizing Maxims
DESCRIPTION:When your school has a strong identity\, members of the school community—students\, teachers\, staff\, family members—should feel that the shared identity shows up inside and outside the classroom. Your school may have a mission statement or vision\, but what does that look like throughout the school day and week? Are members of your community able to point to examples of your shared identity in class\, in school structures? In this Webinar\, Erik Lathen\, Principal of North Valley High School in Grants Pass\, OR\, will share how he is putting their maxims (school identity statements) to use in every period\, every day\, for all students.

SUMMARY:Crowdsource Coffee: Rethinking Systems with a Trauma-Responsive Mindset
DESCRIPTION:About This Event\n\n\n\nCrowdsource Coffees are just-in-time conversations about topics relevant to leaders in the Portico community. These conversations are for school leaders to discuss shared challenges and exchange insights about what’s working as they transform the student experience and use inclusive leadership practices with their communities. \nAccording to the CDC\, serious trauma and adversity affect up to two-thirds of children in the United States and poses a large public health issue. Experiencing trauma impacts a student’s development\, long-term health\, and ability to engage successfully in school. This Crowdsource Coffee will explore how educators can understand and support students—in particular\, how school-wide systems can be more inclusive and responsive to trauma-exposed students.  \nExplore resources related to this topic in the Crowdsource Forum.

SUMMARY:Crowdsource Coffee: Equity in the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Framework
\nPositive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based framework for supporting students’ academic success\, social-emotional learning\, and school climate. Racial inequities in school discipline such as suspensions and expulsions are widespread and well-known\, contributing to disparate outcomes for students of color. Hence\, explicitly centering racial equity in implementing PBIS or any other behavioral management framework is crucial to helping all students succeed\, instead of reinforcing existing inequities. This Crowdsource Coffee will feature discussion about how leaders can evaluate and rework their own systems with equity at their core. \n  \nJoin Zoom here: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86298265054
